However, he is just flying a flag, he didn't fly the flag to cause problems. In this case it was the townspeople that started the problems, not the man. Why should he not fly his flag? It's kind of like the rebel flag thing. Some here in the south still fly it out of hatred and some out of a sense of southern pride but many people object to it. A business hoping to cater to blacks and whites wouldn't display it because they know they lose customers, even if they had no bigotry in their hearts.
This man has to make a decision about whether he wants customers or if he wants to show the people that he doesn't care how they feel about him. How far is he willing to go? Will he let his family and business suffer because of it? Maybe he feels it's worth it to be dead right but I wouldn't.
