Default Barack Obama Elementary School - Closed

How fitting that a school named after our profligate, post-achievement president is shutting down thanks to fiscal mismanagement and non-achievement.

    ----------------

The state fiscal monitor who oversees financial operations in the school district Thursday morning ordered the closing of the Barack H. Obama Elementary School as of July 1.

Students next year will go to the district’s two other more modern elementary schools — Thurgood Marshall on the east side and Bradley on the west side.

Bruce Rodman, the monitor, made the decision after the school board in recent weeks failed to support a plan by Schools Superintendent Denise Lowe to reconfigure elementary grades to create early childhood learning centers in the district, a plan which would have kept the Obama school open.

Officially renamed early in 2010 after the president, the building was known as the Bangs Avenue School since it was built a century ago. The state School Development Authority had planned to build a new school to replace the historic building, but has pulled back and Lowe said recently the state would not build a new school.

    ------------------------------

Reader Peter adds: “Asbury Park’s school system was taken over by the state of New Jersey a few years back (along with those of other underachieving municipalities) for gross managerial incompetence. The state has, in the meantime, poured beaucoups bucks into the district. According to Education.com, the district spends nearly $36,000 per student but pulls in the lowest test rating the site offers.”

    Yes they can?

    Not any more.

Sing it with me: “Mmm, mmm, mmm…”

The pitiful partisan display of using the unfortunate closing of an elementary school to gain political points aside, I'd like to point out that there are six more schools named after Barack Obama in this country that appear to be doing just fine (with a 7th in the works in North Carolina). What does that mean? Absolutely nothing.

Basically, this thread is pretty ridiculous, serves no purpose, has no potential for any sort of meaningful discussion, takes up space on the internet, and probably just made me dumber for having participated in it. That is all.

    Can anyone say irony?

I'll wager that you'll never hear about this on the lame stream media. Not that it's a big deal, I guess.
Given the changed post-election legislative landscape I can only hope that the administration and the congressional houses can find a way to work together, finding the right compromises to do the people's business, while keeping the people's best interests at heart, and may civility return to the public discourse. We, as a nation, certainly need all of these things.

Yeah, well that's a lost cause now for sure.

Should I join in the pitiful partisan display and point out that there are still 5 more Barack Obama Schools operating than there are George W. Bush Schools.
As a matter of fact, of all the presidents, George W. Bush is in last place for school namings, with 1 total. Pretty good for the guy who called himself "The Education President".....

I'm good, thanks. One can certainly think something is stupid without getting upset about it, I'm sure you know this, despite your post showing otherwise.
BTW: best news I've had today... yup... it's been that kind of day.
Sounds like a shitty day. Need a hug?
