By a vote of 49 in favor and 48 opposed, the Gay Marriage Amendment has failed. A super-majority of 60 votes is required to bring the Amendment to the floor, and the support for the Amendment fell well short.
No links yet, the vote was just announced on CNN HN.
Personally, I am glad to see this Amendment fail.

What a ridiculous attempt to rally the ultraconservative base.
Pathetic to the core.
I'm glad it failed, as well.

Predictable, but still welcome results.

I have never been convinced the conservative leaders want this issue solved. It is such a perfect and everlasting mechanism to 'rally the base' and distract them from whatever other fuck-ups you have created. Same goes for abortion. Why would the conservatives ever want to see this issue actually solved in their favor, its just such an awesome trump card at opportune times.
I.e., Whats this about a massacre, lets bring up up the gay issue again and get our support back up...

Allow me to add another "hurrah!" to the failure of this Ammendment.
By the by, it takes 67 votes to make a super-majority of the Senate, not 60.
BS as usual. Obviously, you have not been following the news about Bush's approval ratings, and you are also ignorant of the bill's progress through the Senate prior to Bush's endorsement of it. You find it easier to pull more anti-American propaganda out of your rear, as usual.Originally Posted by Andrewl

I guess it's basically a grab at straws by our president, a liberal who DRESSES in conservative clothes only. If he was really honest he would have done this long ago. No, he waited until most of America hated him and THEN tried to pull it off. Nothing but pure showmanship.
What a lame ass motherfucker.

Use liberals artistic manipulation of logic and language against them.
True, but the vote was not to send the Amendment to the house, but to bring it to the floor of the Senate, which would have taken 60 votes.Originally Posted by Purple
Either way, it didn't make it.

I doubt it. There'll always be another hot-button issue to pull on, it's not like they're going to run out.Originally Posted by Andrewl
Anyway, if you were the one to put an end to abortion you'd be hailed as the Grand Pooba of social conservatism for the rest of your career. You would no longer need "distractions".
