Things arent supposed to get going here until later tonight, and the eye is supposed to pass by around 8am tomorow. Just some passing showers right now. Finished putting everything outside away. We're having quite a boring saturday here, actually, while we wait for the storm.
Glad you checked in because this one is no joke. If she'd just move inland somewhere and lose some strength...but no, she's definitely a bitch riding the coast and feeding off the ocean. Keep us updated, please....I have to leave for work in a minute but I'll be checking my phone to make sure you guys are following my orders!!!!Stay safe.

Well, managed to survive the great quake earlier this week in my 7th floor office in downtown DC earlier this week despite the hysterical over reactions around me. I suspect I shall weather this (no pun intended) in a similar manner in my home in the MD/DC suburbs. My brother wants to get t-shirts made that say "I survived the 2011 Hurriquake!"
Hurricanes are generally only a threat to the people who don't bother to get out of their way.
Although, hearing the tales of woe of people who were out yesterday trying to find batteries and flashlights was another cautionary tale against the economic folly of "anti-gauging" laws, which basically turn scarce commodities into horrendously mis-allocated first-come, first-serve objects of hording. Everyone who was unable to find any batteries (while some will have purchased way more than they will need) are victims of economic ignorance.
"It's a good feeling to shoot a bad guy. Something you democrats would never understand. Americans are homesteaders, we want a safe home, keep the money we make, and shoot bad guys!"

10 out of 10 for not making a wet T shirt joke.

After Katrina, I didn't have use of my phone for days and when it finally rang for the first time, it was Chassiman and he came back and posted here. Through that, another member was able to post a message to my aunt who had searched for me on the MSNBC website. (I didn't know of that until I was finally able to get back online.) Anyway, if there's a regular poster here that you guys feel comfortable exchanging phone numbers with, please do so, so that in the event that we don't hear from you online in a few days, they can at least trying calling to see if everything is okay.

Just to add to that, if there's anything any of us can do to help (pass on messages, contact loved ones etc) please don't hesitate to ask.

Yeah stupidity often causes the demise of many in these things, e.g. people who think hurricanes are cool and wish to ride them out with a party rather than get out when they live on a barrier island, people who think their car is a boat when attempting to drive through flooded roads, etc.
People often do silly things in undue panic too. You mentioned purchasing goods for example. A classic I notice is people overstocking themselves on perishable items by fearing they'll have a power outage. What good is milk in heat with no operating refrigerator for example? Impulsive purchasing is a classic example of what happens when people let fear overtake their rational sides.
