Nothing. The thread was hijacked by a discussion about the oil industry, that really belongs elsewhere.

I think Obama should have said that he would welcome a bi-partisan balanced budget amendment, as a part of the long-term solution to the deficit problem.

Yep, and it doesnt have to be this text. Personally I would prefer a simple BBA not coupled with other laws. 'Govt may not borrow money except in a congress declared state of emergency'

I saw a pundit declare that

the USA is the only country in the world that does not, will not,

attack and develope its own vast resorces in oil, natural gas, coal, shale, etc

to get itself out of economic disaster, stimulate the economy, and generate jobs.

Why is that? Is the "danger" to the environment and climate greater than the debt and unemploment consequences? I think not!

The Pubs cannot discern the difference between a business and a gov't. They want to make gov't operate like a profit driven business. Someone needs to tell em these two entities are not the same.

Of course if there were a war to go and wage, they would forget about the business comparison...which is convenient when you want to spend billions on killing other folks. Yet, they hate social safety nets. That is, they only want to spend money on killing someone they don't like, while not giving a fuck about their own people, whom they cut the legs from under at evey opportunity.

It is true that a government and a business are two different types entities, but they must still operate in the same financial system, and the need for a balanced budget is driven by operating in the financial system.
Given the changed post-election legislative landscape I can only hope that the administration and the congressional houses can find a way to work together, finding the right compromises to do the people's business, while keeping the people's best interests at heart, and may civility return to the public discourse. We, as a nation, certainly need all of these things.

Yeah, well that's a lost cause now for sure.
