Ron Paul, among others, voted against an amendment to the latest Defense Authorization Act which addressed the Rules of Engagement in hostile areas.
The amendment (here) simply states:
I don't know why he voted this way but, having been in one of those hostile situations before, I'm generally all for having the unrestricted right to defend myself.The Secretary of Defense shall ensure that the rules of engagement applicable to members of the Armed Forces assigned to duty in any hostile fire area designated for purposes of section 310 or 351(a)(1) of title 37, United States Code--
(1) fully protect the members' right to bear arms; and
(2) authorize the members to fully defend themselves from hostile actions.
