Default Department of Education censors words America and American

A Michigan judge is accusing the state's Department of Education of censoring the words "America" and "American" from public schools.
The words "America" and "American" were ordered out of the state testing program and instruction to those drafting curriculum content standards to remove the words as well. According to Warren, the department also issued a verbal directive to high-profile educators that they should instruct their teachers to stop using the words because they are "ethnocentric."
The education department denies the allegations saying America and American weren't targets...

Alt. Source: http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7...4090--,00.html

Commentary: The dept acknowledges the words were taken off the test but will not admit it’s a formatted plan for the education system. Educator's were advised that America/American is ethnocentric, and offends some students, not instructed never to say it at all...

Anybody wanta tackle this one?

I think your alternative source tackles it nicely.

Thanks, Hank, for posting this.

The proper name for my nation is United States of America, not America.

While I like to call myself 'American', the technical word is 'citizen', I believe.

I can see the point of the school board member, but since America and American have been used for two centuries, we do well to acknowledge the fact.

I am proud to be an American...

This story is doubly funny. It guaranteed to offend the sensibilities of every American (United Statesian??? ). Also, we "North Americans" would never confuse the term "American" with meaning anything other than a citizen of the United States of America, and in fact would probably take offense at being called American.

Nothing to tackle. You actually for once linked to a site that debunks your own assertions. Did you read the information at mich.gov you linked to? If so can you tell me where it says educators were advised this is a ethnocentric term that is offending some students. In fact the mioch.gov site refutes every point you made. Furthermore I live in Michigan and I know the stuff you assert is pure unadulterated bullshit. Nice try though.

Hank you can't be this slow.
