Actually you're right, this lobbying does exist and it is terrible that things are that way.

If people were glavanized (and obviously more informed) against this then the government would be kept in check. The government wouldn't fold so easily for DOD lobbyists if they (politicans) knew that there would be definite repurcussions for neglecting aspects like education. Nothing scares a Democrat or Republican politician more than a well informed public. With our countrymen generally being far from that, we can expect no such thing to take place. Government spending and government actions can do only so much (though it is vital to education in large ways.) It is ultimately up to the people to make the decision of who is going to spend the money for what in these government actions by voting informed. I'm glad we (and I assume most others on this forum) find common ground in this.

I guess a good subquestion for this thread is "What can we do to make people more informed?" but that one has been batted for thousands of times, heheh.
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance!

You deny them the power to do what you say you want them to do. Then when they are unable to do it, then you call them incompetent. I just point out the flaw in your reasoning.

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the UN?

Well it's highly likely that the President of any country, including the United States will give the Secretary General of the UN the power to send troops to wherever he says they should go. So it's not fair to blame the UN for not having powers that this country would deny to them.

So OK, we get rid of the UN like you want. What happens if you need to send in some neutral troops? What if you want to send in some weapons inspectors to North Korea or Iran? You say you will send in some Belgian inspectors, and the North Koreans and Iranians say that they are biased in favor of the UN. So you just lost an opportunity to do something you wanted, because you don't have an imparital organization to do it with.

You say that we should get rid of the UN because of disagreement within the UN. Isn't it important for the United States to listen to the disagreement from other countries? Is it right that only the US' opinions count?

I made two typos in the above post. I said: "Well it's highly likely that the President of any country, including the United States will give the Secretary General of the UN the power to send troops to wherever he says they should go."

    Should be HIGHLY UNLIKELY.

Also, "You say you will send in some Belgian inspectors, and the North Koreans and Iranians say that they are biased in favor of the UN" should be in favor of the US.

    Apologies.

Exactly, but right now our education system can't even teach a lot of kids the basics because they can't afford books and computers to teach the kids with. This is why we need more funding for our education system.

Yeah, this is what troubles me about this whole thing so much. Most people, if asked, will say that the education system needs more money, that education should be a priority, yet no one does anything about it. We need to find away to grab people's interest, but that costs money. The only way to get money for a cause is for the cause to make some one a profit. Education is not that profitable, and when it is privatized for the sake of profits, it often than not becomes a terrible education. The only good support our education system can get is from the grassroots level, people who do things because they believe in it, not for the profit. Unfortunately, I just don't think enough people care to make a big difference.
