Yes I like to study this period of time too including 1st world war.

Yes. I have great respect for the military of that time. I don't think our generation (American or European) could do what they did. It was a terrible war , but still, the courage of the French, English and Germans in the trenches was remarkable. I read a book recently on Verdun.

Those poor bastards
I dunno if I should think of it as remarkable or more over I pity them for what they were forced to go through...
The whole thing just made no sense.
The 1871-1914 time is kinda like the Cold War... just with a crazy maniac and Generals who thought it would be a piece of cake.

Is it me, or does Alaska look huge on the map for post#5? I know it's big, but it looks like it's about the size of Australia and almost the size of the mainland US.

I always love looking at old maps for this reason. Because they didn't have all the sophisticated technology we use today, they had to rely on much more rudementary tools. Although very, very impressive in accuracy, some things just aren't right. The best maps, in my opinion, are the ones made when they were still exploring North and South America. They were amazingly accurate in some spots, but so far off in others.

And it's always a bonus if it has a sea dragon put somewhere in one of the oceans.

In order to post a map of a globe you have to strech the upper parts...

I agree. I pity them, AND I think their courage and their perseverence were remarkable. That is the frustrating thing about reading about World War 1. It's almost unbearable to read about. The Somme! Horrible. But I do admire their courage.

Thanks!

But, seriously, I knew this when I took things into account. Just to be sure I wasn't being a retard (which I can be often), I went and double checked a modern day map (that was flat, like these) and still, Alaska is not as giant as it is in that map.

Maybe my eyes are failing me, but dammit, it looks like it's the same latitudinal length as Russia...

I'll just shut up now. That's what I get for having been to every state....but Alaska...

You're right. The perspective is slightly off. That's one of the fascinating things about old maps. Occasionally that happens. BTW - any chance of putting these in their own section, so they don't get lost in the shuffle? That way they can be used for reference and added to. Is that possible - moderator?

I think it could be a good source for references. I, unfortunately don't have the power to add new forums on this site. I saw someone (was it Anselme?) who made a post asking Marc to add a forum and that's really the best way to go about it. If it has enough of a demand, Marc is usually pretty good at giving the people what they want. My only concern may be that too many large pictures posted here might take up a bit too much space...

Anyways, go on over to the thread asking for this type of forum and give your support!

It's really a good map. And my hometown is on it.
