In Santa Fe, New Mexico we had these sorts of incidents. In fact at a high School some kids were parading around with Mexico's flag and tried to rip down the United States of America flag. Then they attacked kids carrying the U.S. flag. It got so bad that the cops were called.

Bullshit. This is our country, not theirs. They have no right to be here. Period. They want to fly the Mexican flag then they can get their ass back to Mexico and do it. If they want to stay in America, then they become American.

Irish Need Not Apply

Quote:
Though life in Ireland was cruel, emigrating to America was not a joyful event...it was referred to as the American Wake for these people knew they would never see Ireland again. Those who pursued this path did so only because they new their future in Ireland would only be more poverty, disease, and English oppression. America became their dream. Early immigrant letters described it as a land of abundance and urged others to follow them through the "Golden Door." These letters were read at social events encouraging the young to join them in this wonderful new country. They left in droves on ships that were so crowded, with conditions so terrible, that they were referred to as Coffin Ships.

Even as the boat was docking, these immigrants to America learned that life in America was going to be a battle for survival. Hundreds of runners, usually large greedy men, swarmed aboard the ship grabbing immigrants and their bags trying to force them to their favorite tenement house and then exact an outrageous fee for their services. As the poor immigrant had no means of moving on, they settled in the port of arrival. Almshouses were filled with these Irish immigrants. They begged on every street. One honest immigrant wrote home at the height of the potato famine exodus, "My master is a great tyrant, he treats me as badly as if I was a common Irishman." The writer further added, "Our position in America is one of shame and poverty." No group was considered lower than an Irishman in America during the 1850s.

...

Free land did not lure them. They rejected the land for the land had rejected them; yet even so they always spoke reverently of the old sod in Ireland. All major cities had their "Irish Town" or "Shanty Town" where the Irish clung together. Our immigrant ancestors were not wanted in America. Ads for employment often were followed by "NO IRISH NEED APPLY." They were forced to live in cellars and shanties, partly because of poverty but also because they were considered bad for the neighborhood...they were unfamiliar with plumbing and running water. These living conditions bred sickness and early death. It was estimated that 80% of all infants born to Irish immigrants in New York City died. Their brogue and dress provoked ridicule; their poverty and illiteracy provoked scorn.

The Chicago Post wrote, "The Irish fill our prisons, our poor houses...Scratch a convict or a pauper, and the chances are that you tickle the skin of an Irish Catholic. Putting them on a boat and sending them home would end crime in this country."

Instead of apologizing for themselves they united and took offense. Insult or intimidation was often met with violence. Solidarity was their strength, they helped each other survive city life. They prayed and drank together. The men seemed to do more drinking than praying, yet it was their faith and dogged determination to become Americans that led one newspaper to say, "The Irish have become more Americanized than the Americans."

It would be better to send those jobs they always get in the US to Mexico, save them that long ass walk.

Oh, quite a bit has changed. When the mass immigration was going on in the early twentieth century those people came here, LEGALLY, were checked in at Ellis Island or whatever port of entry they came into, and then went off and earned their living. They were not given welfare, food stamps, social security, free schooling, or any other public benefit, and those that came from countries where English wasn't the native language were expected to learn it. They also became Americans. While they still may have retained their native culture among their families or local neighborhoods, when they left their homes they were Americans, first, and their native background, second.

That's not the way the Mexicans are doing it. They are invading this nation by the millions, ILLEGALLY. They are sneaking over the border. Many of them refuse to learn English. They have their kids here and then collect social services as a result, while still being illegal themselves and paying no tax dollars to fund it. They go to our hospitals and let the taxpayers foot the bill. They don't want to be Americans. They just want to bring Mexico here. It's quite a different scenario these days with this group.

Of course, you clearly have no problem with this as we've seen, and that makes you just as bad as them. But, keep it up. Keep cheering them on. Keep pushing them to march in the streets by the thousands holding up a Mexican flag for the whole nation to see. They are hurting themselves by doing that because those images on TV are enraging Americans all across this country.

I would? Wow, I didn't think so, but thanks for informing me. Although the chances are that I would never enter a country illegaly. I have too much respect for other countries. I like to obey laws. Also, these were kids, so most likely they will not become felons.

Although a few in Santa Fe have become felons since they found guns on some of the high schoolers. Makes you wonder what they were planning on doing.

Sure you do. Your a good citizen. You don't have that choice of living in your current country and earning $4/day compared to migrating to the US making $4/hour. So, put your OWN kids in one hand and respect of countries in another. See which one's you perfer to benefit from this.

Well, $4 a day in some other country just may be enough to live on. Just like in so cal 80K a year is needed to live ok, but in New Mexico you can live great on 30K a year. See cost of living is different every where you go.

But my own kids vs respect of other countries.... I wouldn't jeopardize my family by trying to make it in another country ILLEGALY. I would apply and do what it takes to become a citizen. But that's just me. Evil slimey "neocon".
