I live in a town that was built by immigrant labor from eastern europe. The grandparents of many of the people who live here now were immigrants. The letter mischaracterizes those immigrants in at least three ways.
Learning english was NOT a priority for all the immigrants. Some learned english and some of those benefitted by being able to get better jobs. Many never learned english and there were neighborhoods in this town where you could communicate with shopkeepers, landlords, etc in slovak or polish or russian with never a word of english needed. The children learned english but at home they spoke the mother tongue. Not all the immigrants were hard working honest and upstanding. For many years most of the criminal activies in this area (at least at the bottom rungs of criminal enterprise) were carried out by immigrants. Lots of the immigrants from eastern europe did not wait in line at ellis island. They came to canada (easier entry) and then simply crossed the border (no border security back then) into the US - most commonly to michigan - and then came here. Today's immigrants are no different than any immigrants that ever came here. If you want to stop them, start punishing the people who hire them. No jobs for illegal immigrants = no illegal immigration. |

There is no basis other than your own prejudice for such a conclusion.

And maybe you have another explanation for the obviously false comparisons between today's brown immigrants and last century's white ones that seem to characterize so much of the right wing propaganda on this subject and that were so aptly demonstrated in the letter that started this thread. |

The concept of inalienable rights died a long time ago. The Statue of Liberty is a beautiful piece and representative of a long ago golden age, but it seems to have lost it's meaning. |

Would we still be having this discussion if we were a part of the US of Earth?
Hypothetically, could the red states obtain welfare-state funding from the interstate federal public sector; ostensiby, for the public good? |
