Default sheriff's on the right track

He needs to start actually making arrests though. Eventually, the employers will call his bluff if he doesn't.

Deportation Fears Force Illegals into Hiding in Ohio
Monday, July 31, 2006
Associated Press

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — At his Tienda La Raza grocery store and restaurant, Jose Bravo sells Spanish-language DVDs and Mexico soccer jerseys, chorizo sausage and chopped cactus. Lately, there has been another hot seller — one-way bus tickets out of here.

"People that had been in the United States for a while, who were planning to stay, now they feel scared," Bravo said. He said he has sold at least 10 tickets in recent weeks to people who are moving to Michigan or other parts of Ohio, or who have decided to go back to Mexico...

...Around the county, billboards show Sheriff Richard Jones — arms folded across his burly chest, a revolver at his side — warning, "Hire an Illegal-Break the Law," with "Illegal Aliens Here" in a circle with a slash through it...

...The issue boiled over after the rape of 9-year-old white girl in June 2005 in Hamilton. That sparked days of unrest, including the appearance of robed Ku Klux Klansmen and the torching of the house where the suspect, a Mexican immigrant who quickly disappeared, was staying.

If I am not mistaken that is a federal issue and that is why he has not made any arrests that have stuck. In fact based on an NPR story of this guy not to long ago he has made arrests and after turning them over to the feds they were let go.

That truly sucks! Politicians in Washington are never going to get serious about this for fear of losing the Latino vote.

Let me see if I understand. Politicians in Washington are going to increase border security, crack down on illegal aliens wherever they may be found, coerce charitable organizaitons to turn in any ilegals who conme to them for help. But they are not going to prosecute employers because THAT might cast them the Latino vote? Somehow I don't think this adds up to concern about latino votes. The latinos still get it in the neck. Only the employers get off so maybe it's their votes that the politicans are worried about??

Horrible, but true. In fact, the employers are the key to this entire issue. Millions would leave in droves if the law were simply applied to the employers who hired them. If they know they can not get jobs, why would they stay? You would see millions of them leave.

If politicians were serious about cracking down, they would have by now. Instead, all they're doing is paying lip service.

I agree with your opinion. That is why I tend to prefer a welfare-state model over a warfare-state model. More market friendly policies will also tend to increase revenue, ceteris paribus.

I am of the opinion, that a better system of market friendly immigration policies would also help generate enough revenue to be self-sufficient.
