We should absolutely do that along our southern border. It's sad that it's come to that, but Mexico is a country which has zero interest in keeping their citizens from entering the United States illegally, and has gone so far, in some cases, to help them. Mexico is also a country which enforces some rather draconian laws with regards to illegal aliens, and is all too happy to take money from us to help curb their own illegal immigration issues.
That they take offense at us wanting to build a wall, or enact laws against border States, is laughable...

Firstly, the GDR built the Berlin wall and the death strip along its border with western Germany to keep people IN and not OUT. In the decade before 1961 2,7 million people had fled westwards to escape communist oppression. Secondly the GDR border troops were using deadly force not only in theory but also in reality. The precise number of people killed while trying to flee is not completely clear, but it is high enough to constitute a "crime against humanity". In the city of Berlin alone over 136 victims are confirmed, but the total number is considered to be well over one thousand. To laud the eastern german border regime and to recommend it as something for the US to be taken over is either pretty ignorant or pretty outrageous.

"Der Spiegel" has an opinion piece today attacking the US tea party for numerous, partially ridiculous and partially outrageous references to german history, both to the Berlin wall and to Hitler ( like Obama/Hitler comparison) and explains why Germans view that as offensive :
