ahoy all!
durin' the debates last night, Mr. Perry offered a quip regardin' AGW;
i thought this was an interestin' analogy, since Mr. Perry be the one who offered it up, aye?“The science is not settled on this. The idea that we would put Americans’ economy at jeopardy based on scientific theory that’s not settled yet to me is just nonsense,” Perry said. “Just because you have a group of scientists who stood up and said here is the fact. Galileo got outvoted for a spell,” he said.
Rick Perry, Galileo and Global Warming - ABC NewsPerry was referencing the Galileo affair of the 1600′s when the scientist was accused of heresy for his scientific theories.
Galileo underwent a trial in 1633 for his book “Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems,” which compared the theories of Copernicus and Ptolemy. Galileo was convicted of grave suspicion of heresy” and was sentenced to house arrest for the duration of his life.
In 2000, Pope John Paul II issued an apology for the mistakes committed by Catholics over the past 2,000 years.
*scratches his noggin'*
so what, precisely, was the mighty Governor 'o Texas gettin' at? the folks who were contendin' with Galileo, afterall, weren't exactly fellow scientists...'twas the dogmatic Church, which lived in them dark ages 'o religeon o'er science. in this case, we've almost the exact opposite.
on one hand, we have these folk, The National Acadamy of Scientists. who be they?
Logicalscience.com - The Consensus On Global Warming/Climate Change: From Science to Industry & ReligionFor those that don't know, the National Academies are like the Supreme Court of science. The number of climate scientists in the US can be found by examining the members of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). As of November 10, 2006 we know that there is a minimum (no official count of foreign climatologists is available) of 20,000 working climatologists worldwide 1,2.
An important fact to remember is that many high profile critics you see in the news do not qualify as climate scientists when these standards are applied. Keep both of these concepts in mind the next time you see a handful of self proclaiming "climate scientists" with dissenting opinions.
and what do them folks at the National Acadamy of Science say?
in light 'o this, imma curious...We urge all nations, in the line with the UNFCCC
principles4, to take prompt action to reduce the causes of
climate change, adapt to its impacts and ensure that the
issue is included in all relevant national and international
strategies.
is Rick Perry claimin' to be kinda like Galileo?

Perry is a science denier. He is appealing to a constituency which is just as ignorant of science as the 17th century church was. Most of the people he is talking to have no idea who galileo was or why he was persecuted by the church so they have no idea Perry doesn't understand his own analogy.
A presidential candidate who encourages the deliberate ignorance of the creationist/global warming denial movement is an embarrassment to the country and his candidacy an insult to educated americans.
ahoy Timj219,
tonight i took me parents out fer dinner, and whilst eatin' our appetizers, i asked me father (a lifelong Republican who hates talkin' to me about politics) what he thought about Mr. Perry.
me father frowned and only offered this;
"tah yo eedien bin"
the english translation fer that, roughly, be this - "he is a little bit stupid".
me father then asked our waiter fer some Splenda fer his tea and seemed disinterested in continuein' the conversation.
aye.

It's an apt analogy.

ahoy Commodore,
i don't think it is, matey.
the scientists 'o Galileo's era weren't really in disagreement with his conclusions...'twas the dogmatic, non-science believin' church that castigated him fer his theories.
in this case, Governor Perry be castin' himself in the role 'o Galileo, yet it be himself that be denier 'o the overwhelmin' consensus 'o the scientific community. 'tis like he inverted the analogy.
aye?

(My emphasis)
Nah, if the gobernador were to consider himself as anyone we've ever heard of from that era, it would be Machiavelli. The transnational megacorps in the US are analogous to the guilds in Europe @ the time. Just as the big M never met an interest group of the time - a player that he could cajole or hookwink into playing his game - el gobernador has never met a zaibatsu that he didn't feel obliged to embrace.
Gob. Perry has slashed away @ TX Dept. of Educ., the TX university system, slashed teacher salaries K-12. The TX GOP has had David Barton - Founding Father quote falsifier par excellence on their payroll, & the TX State Dept. of Education wrote T. Jefferson out of the history/civics curriculum. Once the fairy dust industry really gets going there, I'm sure they'll lobby to rewrite the science curriculum to drop Newton & repeal the law of gravity. After all, look what they've done with gravitas ...
Fortunately, I don't think Gob. Perry is electable. He's more or less W without the micron-thick veneer of charm ... My money's still on Gov. Romney. although I'm sure the true believers don't much cotton to the man.
