Default Expectations of Saddam's trial

I certainly expect more witnesses and lawyers will get killed before Saddam gets convicted. I think proving a death penalty case will be a cinch, but I wonder whether they will give him life imprisonment as a gesture to the Sunnis. People around the world already know Saddam is a henious person and his long list of evil deeds, so I don't think that will change many opinions on the war whatever they may already be.

Likely some more will get injured or killed, and there will be alot of attempts. I give it to the Iraqi judicial system--they are all willing and eagre to take the challenge and stand defiant against those who would intimidate them into not doing their jobs.

When they execute him, they will turn him into a martyr for the disaffected arab world for the next 100 years.

Saddam is shrewdly playing politics from his seat at the defense table now.

Someday, the Iraqis will erect a monument on his tomb if we kill him.

What's his defense? "These people were a threat to my country, I took pre-emptive actions against them in the name of law and order and safety of my people." He'll shove George Bush's words down his own throat.

Further, this kangaroo court we're holding in Baghdad....... if we were going to try him anywhere, it should have been before a world body, not the "new government of Iraq" which the arab world (and the rest of it too) knows is merely a proxy for the United States.

What I find interesting is the fate of Saddam if america pulls out. Obviously the americans are leaning towards an early '06 'reduction' in troops. One imagines that they would like the trial to be speedy and death to be speedier. If it is contnually delayed can the americans actually leave, just think about the fallout if he is busted out by the Sunnis? Nah..can't happen, he would possibly succumb to an unfortuante accident???

Or if the americans leave would they take Saddam to the ICC?

Ramsey Clark, Attorney General under LBJ, will undoubtedly do something to make sure he embarrasses the US. I cannot abide that a former high US official will be on the defense team for Saddam Hussein. This is treason of the highest sort.

I don't think it's shrewd. I think we have an Iraqi version of Lance Ito for his judge.

Under the Iraqi constitution, the president is immune from prosecution for crimes that occurred during his presidency.
So this court is a joke, and the arab world will see it as "Victor's Justice".
Bush just killed 800 civilians in Fallujah, are we going to string him up?
The new puppet government is running death squads and torturing their opponents, are they going on trial?
