A meglomaniac like Saddam does not say anything at face value. Everything has a hidden agenda to reinforce his overblown image of himself. He probably really believes that he is a great Arab Warrior, a modern day Saladin, that will be celebrated in history.

Obviously he is planning his immortality at this point, fully aware of the symbolic effects of the execution that he assumes will come.

The best would be not to execute him but let him grow old in jail.

I think he should die but i kind of agree with you there. Let him grow old in jail. it kinda makes me laugh, instead of him going out like a warrior he goes out like a regular old man. But that would just be for personal entertainment. I think there are allot of people in Iraq that would love to see him die and thats who will decide is fate. If the trial is fair, he'll be acquitted, the president is immune from prosecution under Iraqi law.
