Default College Tuition Expected to Soar due to State Budget Constraints

Extreme tuition hikes ahead - Colleges increase tuition after state cuts (1) - CNNMoney

State funded colleges are expecting a tremendous rise in tuition prices. Some colleges expecting as high as a 22% increase. How much do you think this might affect future enrollments in the coming year?

enrollments will remain the same or close to the same, but the demographics will change (at least at traditional 4-year universities).

How will that work? What changes are you foreseeing?

you'll see a greater proportion of "rich kids" attending as tuition rates increase. the number of people able to go to school will drop, but the number of people who are accepted into traditional 4-year schools will remain about the same.

Where do you think the breaking point is with tuition price? At what price level do people say you know what, the hell with it, I really don't want to go to school for 4 to 6 years and come out a quarter million in debt. I believe college education can give an individual an advantage in the application process but that's a ton of debt to take on with no gaurantees of a job at all much less a better paying job than someone who does not earn a college degree.

A better solution would be to close down community colleges and non-competitive state schools entirely.

i don't know where the breaking point is...although i'd say it's much higher than it is now (for most people who go to college). either way, the value of a college degree is still FAR greater than its cost, and i don't think that'll change any time soon. when you think about the alternative of not having a degree, the cost seems relatively puny (on average).

bachelors degrees have become the new high school diploma...in other words, they have become all but essential to finding any kind of decent employment (again, on average).

Well thats kind of what I mean on the bachelors degree. At the rate that tuition goes up, a bachelors degree is not cheap to get especially if you have changes of heart on majors midway through. Like you said bachelors degrees are becoming the new high school diploma, so you'll have to go longer to get a better degree. Most individuals get a bachelors of some sort and call it quits and even these individuals come out owning 10s of thousands of dollars. Unless you are getting a masters or ph.d or something like that what is really the value on any lesser degree as compared to the possible debt you will accrue from student loans if you have no money?

A long time ago the states did much less than they do today. Government at all levels did much less than they do now. And they generally did a good job of it.

Now they do much more... and don't seem to do much of it very well.

Actually quite the opposite the poor will continue to get reduced if not free rides, and the upper middle class will need to either borrow more or stop attending. I pay 13k a year right now in college costs... My employee goes to school for free with grants.. Who is likely to see a cost increase ? Correct me...
