Default Drill Baby Drill, just not in Florida

I thought the GOP was all about drilling our own oil. Except in their own back yard. Even the Tea Party don't want to drill.

Florida Republicans reject Bachmann?s call for Everglades drilling | The Ticket - Yahoo! News

If Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann wants to drill for oil in the Florida Everglades, as she suggested at a recent presidential campaign stop, environmental groups won't be the only ones standing in her way. She'll have to go through members of her own party first.

Both of the Florida Republicans running to defeat Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012 adamantly oppose energy exploration in the national park. So does Florida Rep. Allen West, a member of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, which Bachmann founded.

    What?
    You don't get "nuance"?
"I think -- tide turning -- see, as I remember --I was raised in the desert, but tides kind of -- it's easy to see a tide turn -- did I say those words?"
-- George W. Bush, asked if the tide is turning in Iraq

Doesn't this just totally fuck up your 'all Republicans march in lock step' meme?

Don't you just hate when that happens?

Kudos to those opposed to it. Don't touch the National Parks and Reserves. They were set aside for a reason.

We wouldn't have to drill anywhere if we where allowed to use nuclear power.

No, just shows how hypocritical they are.

They were all for drilling in Anwar, so why not in Florida as well. I'm sure it would be cheaper and lots closer to the refineries.

But Florida doesn't want drilling anywhere near their state and this includes offshore.

That would save lots of oil.

Out of curiosity, whens the last time someone tried to build a nuclear power plant?

Duke officials appeared before the North Carolina Utilities Commission on Tuesday requesting approval to spend $459 million in development costs for a two-unit nuclear plant near Gaffney, S.C.

Duke is awaiting federal approval to build the $11 billion plant. The request on Tuesday would cover development expenses for the plant until 2013.

"Our commitment hasn't faltered," Duke Energy President and CEO Jim Rogers said.

The company has already spent $170 million on the plant, which they hope to make operational by 2020.

Progress Energy, which is in the midst of a merger with Duke, has plans to build two reactors at the Shearon Harris nuclear site in Wake County.

    ...
Drilling is already being done there:
A company that had formerly owned land in the Big Cypress National Preserve section of the park before it became a national park now conducts limited drilling there.
