Default Point of Order: Banner Ads

Not that it matters any, are the banner ads content sensitive?

I don't ever remember seeing one for Square until I mentioned them and linked to their site this afternoon (US time) and within the hour up pops an ad for them.

    Anybody know?

Hmmm didn't follow your question at first but are you asking if the content of the ad is relative to the content of the page that it pops up on?

Oh, I'm pretty sure the ads are sensitive to the content of the thread, at least to some extent. I've noticed frequent ads for gun training (or somehing like that) in threads about gun control, for example.

    Well yes and no.

Like that but Square is also showing up on main pages and search ("New Posts") pages.

Had it not been me that brought it up, I'd have never noticed.

Yes, it is tailored (without intrusion) by the google adsense function we use on the forum. Like with Google's mail system, it will automatically use keywords as triggers to determine which ads to place where without reading contents of the thread, and or mail messages etc.

It works individually for the user as well, so if you posted the stuff about Square its possible that the ad then shows up on all pages you later querry.

So what you're saying is that Google has compiled a history on every IP, stores it in a secret file for later nefarious purposes, and leaks certain details to advertisers who can then stalk you?

I haven't had ads for about 7 years so i doubt i'll be of any help to you on this one... But then again, if my profile picture didn't trigger it off anyway, not sure if anything else will.
