I think it's rather sloppy to think that looking at an event that occurred in the 1880's and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's as being part of the same trend, from which we must "tease" things out. With an 80 year difference between the two events, the onus is on you to show that one directly influenced the other.

But it wasn't the first time a group consciousness had begun to form- the Matachine Foundation was the first (I think) dating from the early 50s- founded by Harry Hay. Unfortunately, some of the founding members were imlpicated as communists during the whole McCarthy buisness, with the result that they were ousted, and the group took a sharp turn to the apologetic- and membership declined.
I think it was not so much hope, as it was a change in their consciousness. I don't believe they thought of themselves as an oppressed minority before. It was society versus each homosexual individual. Society claimed that homosexuals had moral deficiencies or psychologocial deficiencies, that could be treated through counselling.

I'd say that not only did the Civil Rights movement change how homosexuals saw themselves but they also took advantage of the opportunity and momentum created by the Civil Rights movement, the same way that one car drafts another, getting in its wake to take advantage of the air the first pushes out of the way, so the trailing car can move faster.

You have “more people resisting them” then “fighting for what they allege.”
Resistance doesn’t really give that much of a sh*t.
They have lives and are only aware of them when they get in there face or trespass on there rights.
